Morrisons is a UK-based grocery and general merchandise retailer, headquartered in Bradford, West Yorkshire. The company began life as an egg and butter seller in Bradford market in 1899. In 1967, Morrisons became a public company listed on the London Stock Exchange. The company expanded rapidly in the 1970s and 1980s, buying up other supermarket chains and becoming one of the “big four” supermarkets in the UK.
In 2004, Morrisons entered into a joint venture with Dutch retailer Ahold, which saw the two companies jointly operating 300 stores under the Morrisons brand. However, this venture was not a success and Morrisons sold its stake in the business to Ahold in 2006. In 2013, Morrisons acquired British discount supermarket chain Safeway for £3 billion. This made Morrisons the UK’s fourth largest supermarket chain. Today, Morrisons has over 500 stores across the UK and employs over 100,000 people.
