Sky View Observatory
Your first stop in Seattle should be to Sky View Observatory, located in Columbia Centre. Plan your trip to the San Juan Islands, including time on the Great Wheel, time spent shopping in Pike Place Market, time spent hiking in the Cascades, time spent taking the ferry to Bainbridge Island, and time spent cruising Elliott Bay.
The 73rd level of Columbia Centre houses Sky View Observatory. The observation deck is 902 feet high, making it the region’s highest public observation deck. Mount Rainier, Bellevue, the Cascade Mountains, Mount Baker, Elliott Bay, the Olympic Mountains, the Space Needle, and Seattle are all visible in this sweeping vista.
The 76-story, 1.5-million-square-foot Columbia Centre was developed by Martin Selig and finished in 1985. The Carnelian granite and smoked tempered glass exterior houses 2,100 hydronic heat pumps, 48 lifts and 6 escalators. Columbia Centre is one of the strongest and safest buildings in the Pacific Northwest thanks to the various technological advancements required for such a large-scale project, such as viscoelastic dampers and triangle-shaped bracing.
