Emma Bridgewater
It all started in 1984, when Emma had recently graduated from college and was working in London. She went shopping for her mother’s birthday present one day. The two cups and saucers were intended to be an “I love you” gift. ‘I long for you. She browsed the shelves of a china shop in search of a set that would make her feel like she was back in her mother’s North Oxford home. However, back then, it seemed like there were only two options on the British high street: delicate and formal, or sturdy and definitely unromantic. For some reason, Emma was abruptly reminded of the dresser in her mother’s kitchen. She pictured it in this riot of colour and mismatched ceramics in the china shop. Making her own china was obviously necessary if she was going to realise her dream. However, she had no idea how or where to begin looking.
She decided to go to Stoke-on-Trent after a friend casually suggested it. Thus, the modern pottery icon known as Emma Bridgewater was established. In the thirty years since that first spark of inspiration, they have never wavered from their commitment to the importance of perfecting their planning and execution. It is their firm belief that the ordinary kitchen china at the centre of their lives contains personal tales, reflects shared memories, and enriches them as we eat and drink together. All of their designs begin as an emotional reaction to the things they appreciate in life. However, success is only achieved if you share their enthusiasm. Recently, they’ve branched out into other areas outside of ceramics. Now they have their own line of candles and home scents in addition to their designs on glass, tins, picnicware, stationery, wallpaper, and fabrics. Emma still hasn’t stopped having that mental dialogue with her mom from 1984. Only now, they’re hoping, are you included as well.
