The company has grown from its humble beginnings in South Wales to now have six department stores. A family-owned furniture chain in the West Midlands was purchased by Leekes in 2009 to complement the department stores in South Wales and Wiltshire that the company already owned at the time of the acquisition. Through these stores and leekes.co.uk, more people than ever before will be able to shop with Leekes and enjoy the unique experience of shopping in a store that has everything you need to furnish your house under one roof.
In the late nineteenth century, James Henry Leeke founded Leekes, a clothing and accessories company. During that time, the company has expanded to include four department stores, a Building Center in Tonypandy, and a chain of conservatory concessions.
When the Leekes Retail and Leisure Group purchased Hensol Golf Club in the Vale of Glamorgan in 1994, it was a watershed moment in the company’s history. In this way, business diversification into the leisure industry was officially kicked off in earnest.
The golf club was then transformed into the Vale Resort, which includes a luxury four-star hotel, a leisure club, Wales’ largest spa, and two championship golf courses set within more than 600 acres of beautiful parkland in the heart of Wales.
The purchase of the Hensol Castle estate, which is adjacent to the Vale Resort, was announced by the company in 2003. The Estate consists of a stately home built in the 17th century, a landscaped park built in the mid-18th century that is historically significant, a 15-acre lake, and a serpentine pond. The castle is currently being transformed into a world-class spa hotel, and the outlying villas have been renovated and resold as private residences to complement the transformation.
