Mitre Sports International Ltd., commonly referred to as Mitre, is an English sports equipment manufacturer based in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom. Mitre is primarily concerned with association football, but it also provides equipment (mostly balls) for a variety of other sports. The company, which was founded in Huddersfield in 1817, is one of the world’s oldest of its kind, having been in operation since then. Mitre is currently a subsidiary of the Pentland Group, which is owned by a British family.
Mitre UK manufactures and distributes sports equipment for association football (balls, team uniforms, and clothing lines), rugby union (balls, training shirts), basketball (balls), and netball. Mitre also manufactures and distributes sports equipment for golf (balls, rings). Benjamin Crook founded his tannery in Huddersfield, England, in 1817, and gave the company he founded his own name, Benjamin Crook & Co.
The origin of the village’s name can be traced back to a long-standing friendship between Crook and the village’s bishop. Crook chose the name of his company after the ceremonial headdress worn by bishops in traditional Christianity (known as the “mitre”).
Mitre began by manufacturing footballs and rugby balls for clubs all over the world, and in 1959 the company expanded into cricket, soft leather, and bags, among other products. A year later, sports footwear was introduced. Denis Law, a well-known footballer for Manchester United, was the first official Mitre spokesman, appearing in a television commercial in 1964. Mitre went on to become the official ball supplier for the English Football Association two years later, and for the next forty years, the FA Cup Final would be played with a Mitre ball on the field.
Mitchell football boots were worn by Muhammad Ali in his 59th professional fight against Leon Spinks in New Orleans, and Mitchell football boots were worn by Stuart Pearce in 1977. Mitre was also the official ball supplier for the 1987 Rugby World Cup, which was co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand and held in Australia and New Zealand. Mitre became the official ball supplier to the newly formed FA Premier League in 1992,[citation needed] introducing its synthetic footballs in place of the leather balls that had previously been used. The Mitre ball was used at the Netball World Championships in Jamaica in 2003, which were the first time it had been used. Mitre apparel was also worn by the England women’s national netball team, who competed in the tournament.
Mitre arrived in Argentina in 2000, signing contracts with a number of clubs in the Primera División.
