Ian A. Sykes MBE and Ian D. Sutherland launched Nevisport in 1970 because they were worried about the lack of climbing gear available to British climbers at the time. During Sykes’ time in the Royal Air Force and the British Antarctic Survey, members of the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team gathered money to open a Nevisport store in Fort William (BAS).

Outdoor speciality merchants in the United Kingdom have been forced to relocate and create a second location to keep up with their rapid growth. When the company opened its first store in Edinburgh in the early 1990s, it was on the western slopes of Aonach Mor, the highest peak in Britain, that it was likely the only true “mountain” shop.

After 12 years as CEO of the Nevis Range Ski Center, Sykes received an MBE in recognition of his “services to sport and mountain rescue.” Retiring in 2004, Sykes and Sutherland left the company as one of Scotland’s most well-known retailers of outdoor gear. This firm’s headquarters and warehouse were relocated to Glasgow after Jacobs & Turner Ltd bought it in 2003. The company has since added Manchester and Cornwall, making the total number of sites in the UK ten.
