It had all started in 1925, when their founder, naturopath Stanley Lief, a genuine idealist, had a vision. On the day it first became accessible to the general public, it was the only health spa in the whole country.
In the year 1890, a young Stanley who was tormented by an unknown cardiac condition resorted to alternative osteopathic treatment and a strict diet. Eventually, he recovered from the disease at age 16, and he went on to study naturopathy at the Tring estate, which was purchased from the Rothschilds; he also founded what is now known as Champneys. The Purdue family acquired Champneys in 2002 after it had changed hands several times since the founder, Lief, sold it during the 1950s; the name comes from the previous owner of the property, Ralph de Champneys. These purchase deals include the purchase of Henlow Grange in 1981, Springs Health Farm in 1990, and Forest Mere in 1995. The brand Champneys became a synonym for all of these resorts.
Mr. and Mrs. Dorothy and Stephen Purdew, who is mother and son, have guided the company still more to greater success which has already grown substantially.
