MIRVISH PRODUCTIONS

There is no other commercial theatre production firm in Canada that can compare to Mirvish Productions. The firm owns and manages four of the most important theatres in the downtown area of Toronto. Mirvish Productions is responsible for the production and presentation of a large number of plays and musicals each year. These productions are selected from the most well-known theatre from Canada, New York, London, Australia, and other countries. The company produces two subscription seasons: the Main Season, which features well-known productions on a huge scale, and the Off-Mirvish Season, which focuses on plays that are more demanding and smaller in scale. Additionally, it organises a large number of stand-alone performances of new works and revivals, in addition to unique concert engagements of dance, music, and comedy.

An iconic Torontonian who founded the landmark bargain department store Honest Ed’s, Ed Mirvish, made headlines in 1963 when he purchased and saved from demolition Toronto’s historic Royal Alexandra Theatre, which is one of the oldest and most famous legitimate theatres in North America. This event marked the beginning of the company, which is owned by the Mirvish family. Ed Mirvish ran the Royal Alex for the next 23 years, primarily as a “roadhouse,” staging short-run touring productions from London and New York and renting the space to local companies such as the Canadian Opera Company and the National Ballet of Canada. This was the typical way that the Royal Alex had been run for the majority of its history.
