Growing up in the 80s like me, I believe that the Back to the Future trilogy is a special movie that cannot be matched. With the aid of the time-travelling DeLorean, the off-beat hero Marty McFly and the wacky genius Emmett “Doc” Brown ignited the fantasies of no less than an entire generation of moviegoers. We admired the time-travelling DeLorean in the movies and wished we could ride in such a car and enjoy the thrills of travelling through the space-time continuum.

Let me tell you something: dreams indeed come true! The iconic 1985 film has been vividly revamped into a top-notch, time-travelling musical that has already amassed the Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 2022. Back to the Future: The Musical has arrived in the West End at the Adelphi Theatre, and it’s an absolute must-see!

As soon as you get into the theatre, you are just magically transported to Hill Valley, a typical American small town where the whole story comes from. The fantastic set design includes all the iconic places from the film, like the clock tower, Doc’s crazy tent, and Lou’s 1950 diner, where Marty’s magical journey starts. It is a monumental illusion of theatrical magic, which sort of convinces you that the naturally impossible laws of physics are fulfilled by merely looking at a DeLorean car.

As Marty himself might exclaim – “This is heavy, doc!”

The spectacular production values absolutely blow your socks off from start to finish. Every scene transition employs incredible visual trickery and pyrotechnic wizardry to have you believing a Delorean is actually traveling through time right on the stage. It’s an all-out spectacle of projections, flashing lights, smoke and special effects that will have you gaping in awe like a kid again.

But it’s not all just empty spectacle. At its core, the musical maintains the hilarious spirit and heartwarming soul of the original films. The story beats stay refreshingly faithful to the beloved source material, masterfully recreating all the most iconic moments. From Marty’s mishap that leads to his parents falling out of love, to rocking out with his unintentionally inappropriate rendition of “Johnny B. Goode” at the high school dance, to Doc Brown’s frantic efforts to get Marty back to 1985 before it’s too late – it’s all here presented with incredible energy and flair.

The entire cast is simply outstanding, brilliantly capturing the quirky essence of all the original characters we know and love. Ben Joyce is perfect as the skateboarding slacker Marty, nailing both his comedic chops and singing vocals. Cory English is born to play the humorously over-caffeinated and wild-eyed Doc Brown. And Sarah Goggin shines as Lorraine, the naive 1950s teen who develops an awkward crush on her future son. The entire ensemble works in sublime synergy to bring this topsy-turvy world to vibrant life.

Definitely, no Back to the Future experience is ever complete without the signature music, and this is the point where the stage adaptation takes off into space, actually. Besides interpretations of rock standards like “Johnny B. Goode” and “Mr. Sandman” and, of course, the best-selling “Power of Love” by Huey Lewis and the News.  The score is composed by an outstanding crew, Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard. Each fresh tune is a completely killer track that brilliantly brings out the chaos that follows the time travel and the 80s flashback. “Put Your Mind to It” and “Hello? Nobody Home?” are particular standouts made for shouting along to in the aisles.

From the second the time-twisting overture kicks in, to the final euphoric encores, you’ll be scorching rubber as you stomp, clap, and cheer along to this electrifying rock n’ roll musical spectacular. It’s the perfect theatrical joyride for the whole family, delivering a heaping dose of nostalgia for the adults while proving wildly entertaining to all ages. As the wise Doc Brown always reminds us – “Your future is whatever you make it, so make it a good one!” Back to the Future: The Musical is a “whacking great hit” and “perfect escapist fantasy” that will ensure you leave the theatre on an absolute high, ready to embark on your own thrilling adventures through space and time.

So why wait? Re-entry is definitely possible, but you’ll need to book your tickets now before this red-hot show sells out again. As Marty himself might advise: “Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.” Fire up that Delorean for 88mph and get ready for a time-traveling theatrical experience like no other. Just be sure to make it to the Adelphi before this exhilarating ride calls its last “1.21 gigawatts” and disappears forever!

Back to the Future: The Musical is currently running at the Adelphi Theatre in London’s West End. Book your tickets now before it’s too late!
