It was founded in 2006 by Luke Cousins, the then 16-year-old son of a successful St Albans-based veterinarian and veterinary nurse, who was also the company’s first employee. Initially, the business was started as a test to see if it could assist the family’s veterinary practise in selling medication and feeds online after new laws governing the sale of prescription medications went into effect.
The company has grown tremendously since then, and is now one of the largest and most trusted veterinary supplies retailers in the United Kingdom, having outgrown two warehouses before settling in Luton, England, in 2013. Pethealth Inc., a Fairfax company based in Ontario, Canada, acquired VioVet in April 2015 for an undisclosed sum. More than 100 employees work for the company, which now provides pet food and supplies to thousands of pet owners each month, including many customers from other countries.
